VS 2005 SP1 Update fails with the "WindowsUpdate_0000066A" "WindowsUpdate_dt000" error message
I posted this on the Win 7 Update forum but was told to post it here instead. Any help appreciated.Recently installed the SQL Express Mangement Studio 2005 Advanced Services version (having already had the baseic version installed) on Win 7 x64. At the next Win update I was offered Visual Studio 2005 SP1 for the Business Intelligense version that get installed. This update fails with the "WindowsUpdate_0000066A" "WindowsUpdate_dt000" error message. I've looked at various posts which mention it being previously installed, MSXML 6 not being installed etc, but not yetfound a solution.Ian Haynes

Hello Ian,Have you tried renaming the Windows Update Softwaredistribution folder?Rename the Windows Update Softwaredistribution folder================================================This issue may occur if the Windows Update, Software distribution folder has been corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename this folder. Please note that the folder will be re-created the next time we visit the Windows Update site. 1. Close all the open windows. 2. Click the "Start" Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories". 3. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator".4. In "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type in "net stop WuAuServ" (without the quotes) and press Enter. 5. Click the "Start" Button, in the "Start Search" box, type in "%windir%" (without the quotes) and press Enter.6. In the opened folder, look for the folder named "SoftwareDistribution".7. Right-click on the folder, select Rename and type "SDold" (without the quotes) to rename this folder.8. While still in the "Administrator: Command Prompt" window, type the command "net start WuAuServ" (without the quotes) in the opened window to restart the Windows Updates service. If the update still cannot be installed, you can try to disable UAC and theninstall this update by the build-in administrator: Turn off UAC (User Account Control) (use MSCONFIG) ================= 1. Click Start. Type MSCONFIG in the Start Search bar and press Enter. Note: If UAC window prompts for permission to continue, please click Continue. 2. Click Tools. 3. Highlight Disable UAC, click Launch. 4. Restart the computer. Use Command to enable the Built-in Administrator ================================ 1. Click the Start button->All Programs->Accessories. 2. Right click Command Prompt and select "Run as administrator". 3. Click Continue when the User Account Control window appears. 4. Type the following command and press Enter: net user administrator /active:yes Then please try to install the update. If the problem remains, I think you need to reinstall VS 2005.

I'm afraid neither of these solve the problem. It's not the full version of VS2005, just the so called 'Business Intelligense Studio' that gets installed with SQL Server Management Studio Express.Should I re-install SSMSE without using UAC?IanIan Haynes

It didn't fix my problem either. I installed SQL Server 2005 Express Edition on Windows 7 x64, then Windows recommanded the update, then the update failed with the same error. For now I have hidden the update.
